Note that cork is made from the bark of the cork oak tree (&#8220;Sobreiro&#8221; in Portuguese) &#8211; this is a unique tree that will regenerate its bark after is has been stripped off, so no tree are chopped down in the production of cork. These cork oaks can survive 200 years or more and the bark can be harvested once every nine years.
